There are 8 planets in the Solar System. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are solid planets. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are gas giants.

Sun

Sun is the center of the Solar System. It is a star. All objects in the Solar System move around Sun. Sun is very very hot. It gives light to all of Solar System.

Mercury

Mercury is the nearest planet to Sun. But, it is not the hottest planet. It is also the smallest planet in the Solar System.

Venus

Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System. It is the nearest planet to Earth. It is the third brightest planet in the Solar System after Sun and Moon.

Earth

Earth is our home planet. It is the only planet in the Solar System that supports life. It has one moon, our Moon.

Mars

Mars is called morning star.It is also called the red planet because its ground is red in color. Scientists think that long long ago there were rivers on Mars with water just like on Earth. Mars has 2 moons – Phobos and Deimos. Some people are planing to live on the Mars in the future.

Asteroid belt

There are thousands of small and big asteroids in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Some times an asteroid comes out of the Asteroid belt and collides with a nearby planet. Long long ago, an asteroid collided with Earth and killed all dinosaurs.

Jupiter

Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System. It has a big cyclone called Red Eye. It has lots of moons. It’s four biggest moons are Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.

Saturn

Saturn is the second biggest planet in the Solar System. It has a very big ring made up of gases. Like Jupiter, it also has many moons. Its biggest moon is called Titan.

Uranus

Uranus is the third biggest planet in the Solar System. It is difficult to see it with the naked eye. It also has rings like Saturn, but they are much thinner.

Neptune

Neptune is the fourth largest planet in the Solar System. It cannot be seen with bare eye. It is also the farthest planet, so it is very very cold there.

Pluto

Pluto was thought to be a planet once. But it is not a planet any more. That is because, there are thousands of objects like Pluto beyond Neptune. So, now they are called dwarf planets.
